Web Content By Genre: Users' Questions and Writing Standards

We produced this whitepaper after teaching an Advanced Writing for the Web course April 2009. During the course, we developed a list of standards for writing web content of these genres or types:

•    Newsroom pages
•    Contact Us pages
•    Task pages
•    About Us pages
•    Publications pages
•    Newsletter Archives pages
•    FAQs pages

We based our writing standards on the lists we developed of the questions users bring to each type of web page. So, for each, we’ve provided:

•    A list of the questions users ask at that type of page
•    Standards for writing that type of page
•    A short list of samples of that type of page

Use this whitepaper to help you keep users’ needs in mind as you review and edit your own web content.
